I find myself with a growing and ever-present fear these days. It's the fear that comes from painful, global awareness.

I look around, and I see . . . I see pain, disillusionment, and so much animosity. All of the arguments and disagreements that the world holds are constantly being exacerbated, whether by open hatred, cold tension, or simple misunderstanding . . . it's all contributing to the overwhelming sense that the world is on the brink of something terrible.

And it's not just the potential for open warfare that is terrifying.

Look around! See what direction society is heading in, and what direction it has been heading in for decades! It's not simple . . . but at the same time, it is. It's not pretty; it's downright ugly. And yet, isn't there a terrible beauty in how history keeps repeating itself?

No, it's not just the potential for war and human suffering that incites terror in my heart.

It's what I can see in society. When I look around, I see must strife. I see groups becoming more and more polarized, spewing hatred to the others and utilizing vindictive tactics. Each claims that it is being victimized, and yet each is the aggressor, the abuser, the perpetrator of hate crimes.

And I see a movement away from morals, as if the world just doesn't need them anymore. It's as if everyone thinks "those things were for the past," "those things were backwards," and "we are better off without them."

But are we? How could we be "better off" without the moral system that keeps us from committing horrible crimes and enacting terror?

Urban sprawl exacerbates the problems of crime and human suffering. And yet, every day, our cities are becoming more and more sprawling. Our world is becoming more urbanized, and crime does follow. If we don't have morals, we can't push against that. If we don't have morals, there is no counterculture to keep crime from taking over.

We say we're progressive. We say we're better off. But we're not.

When the very family unit is in deterioration, it becomes clear that the very bonds that are supposed to link us as human beings are weakening. It becomes clear that action must be taken. We cannot sit idly by and let the very fabric of our society deteriorate; we cannot allow a dystopian reality to take hold. We must enact a counterculture, to keep driving back the venom that tries to poison our society if we want it to exist at all.

Hello.

1 min read
Hello, I'm Renee.

I write poetry, stories, and vignettes. I also do a fair bit of drawing, and plan on submitting some of my visual artwork in addition to written pieces.

I do like to experiment with various writing styles, and you may notice this in some of my works.

My visual works are likely to center on the natural world, nerdery, nuns or religious imagery, or may be portraits. Many may be abstract.

I have a bit (ha!) of an obsession with DC comics, and I'm especially fond of Superman. And Batman, but it's Superman that usually gets more of my attention -- I go on Batman binges often, though. ^_^
